The Best Tallow Balm Recipe

Tallow balm is a natural skincare product made primarily from rendered beef fat tallow. It is often combined with other nourishing ingredients like essential oils, herbs, or plant butters to enhance its benefits. Tallow balm is valued for its moisturizing properties, helping to hydrate and protect the skin. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, making it particularly beneficial for dry, cracked, or irritated skin. Users often apply it to areas needing extra care, such as elbows, knees, or even on the face for a natural alternative to commercial moisturizers. Some people think of the idea of putting animal fat on their skin as gross, but tallow balm as skincare has been used for thousands of years.

Step 1: Gather Ingredient

You will need tallow, extra virgin olive oil, essential oils, stand or hand mixer, jars, spatula

Step 2: Tallow

You will need 1 cup up tallow. I buy my tallow in bulk on Amazon. I have also bought 100% grass feed organic tallow on Thrive Market; this comes in a small glass jar.

Step 3: Olive Oil

You will need a 1/4 of oil. I like olive oil, but you can use avocado oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, or oil of choice. I buy Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Bona Furtuna. I love this brand!! The oil is a deep green, so it adds a green shade to my tallow. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to improved skin moisturization and anti-aging appearance effects

Step 4: Add Essential Oils

Add 10-20 drops of essential oils of your choice. This step is optional if you have sensitive skin. I use the brand Edens Garden Essential Oils online. Some oils that are great for skin include lavender, chamomile, slay sage, sandalwood, rosemary, frankincense, and geranium.

Step 5: Whip

Whip on medium speed for 5-10 minutes. Similar to whipping cream you will know when it’s done once your tallow balm looks light and fluffy.

Step 6: Jar and Store

I buy small mason jars with lids on Amazon. These are perfect for in your gym bag, traveling, or to give to friends. Because I go through so much tallow balm, I also use large jars that I store in the bathroom. Any excess balm I’m not using I store in the refrigerator in glass jars.
